One year old willow

Willow, if left on its own, will grow into a small tree. To obtain the withy rods necessary for basketmaking it must be cut evey year. It can be cut as a pollard where it is allowed to grow up to the desired height, which can be anything between 20cm and 2m before being cut. It will then produce many rods from the top of the plant out of reach of other weeds, rabbits or deer.
 
 
Or, it can cut at ground level to preduce a willow bed again producing many shoots per plant which are harvested each year. cuttings cuttings are doing it well
 
osier Increasing is done by taking cuttings. These are usually about 20cm and at last 1cm in diameter.
The withy-bed one year old rod's These cuttings are planted to a depth of about 15cm in rows of 0.50m to 1m, depending on the type. The distance between the cuttings is o.10m to 0.15m.
